Excellent news, film fans – Bill and Ted are back this summer.

Two of cinema’s great slacker heroes are making a much-anticipated return, with Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter reprising their classic comedy roles for the first time in 29 years.

The new film was announced in 2018, with excitement building following the release of the first trailer. Presently, the film is one of the movies due to be released in cinemas this summer, in line with cinemas reopening in line with government guidance.

It’s set to be another heady journey through time and space, and one of the comedy events of the year – here’s everything you need to know.

What is the new film about?

Bill and Ted, slackers with a passion for metal music, first appeared in the cult comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure back in 1989, before returning for Bill & Ted’s Bogus Adventure in 1991.

The new film sees them reunite decades after their last outing, with the film showing pair still trying to make it as musicians as they slide into middle age. Things all change when they’re contacted by a time-travelling stranger.

The official synopsis is as follows: “A visitor from the future tells best friends Bill and Ted that one of their songs can save life as we know it and bring harmony to the universe.”

The first clip for the new film shows the pair searching for inspiration after being tasked with writing a song that will reunite the world and "save reality as we know it".

Rather than writing the song, the pair come up with the idea of heading into the future to ‘steal the song’ from their future selves.

They find inspiration from an array of characters along the way, before encountering very different muscle-bound versions of themselves in prison.

There’s no movie without them – Reeves and Winter sparked huge excitement among fans online when they announced they'd be back as the titular metal music-loving pair in the movie.

They’re joined by the likes of Samara Weaving, the Australian actress who made her breakthrough with her central performance in 2019 horror hit Ready or Not. The likes of Brigette Lundy-Paine, Jayma Mays, William Sadler, Hal Landon Jr, Kristen Schaal, Holland Taylor and Kid Cudi also appear in the new film.

Galaxy Quest’s Dean Parisot is in the director’s seat for the sequel, with a script written by original creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon.

“We couldn’t be more excited to get the whole band back together again," Reeves and Winter said when they announced the film in 2018. “Chris and Ed wrote an amazing script, and with Dean at the helm, we’ve got a dream team!”
